Monday, September 21, 2015 is the date that students in Chicago Public Schools (CPS) commemorate the 37th anniversary of Peace Day in Chicago in cooperation with the United Nations International Day of Peace. Students worldwide join in Peace Day activities on the same date. The 2015 U.N. theme for Peace Day is Partnerships for Peace – Dignity for All. This theme is sure to spark lively discussions in classrooms across our city and around the world.
The Chicago Build the Peace Committee, since 2008, has been pleased to partner with Chicago Public Schools by providing CPS with suggested peacebuilding activities such as:
- Build the Peace Pledge
- Peace Breathing Exercise
- Peace Crane Project
- Peace Film and Discussion
- Clean-up Project
- Giant Peace Dove
Schools also are encouraged to create their own Peace Day activities such as peace-themed music, art, poetry, dance, drama, sports, games, and environmental programs, to name a few.
Our summary About Peace Education has ideas for integrating peace education into existing curricula.
